Medical Management of Chemical Agent Contaminated Casualties in Hospital Settings Video

This training is intended for hospitals in CSEPP communities that may need to respond to a chemical warfare agent release that results in a large number of victims being transported or self-evacuating to the hospital emergency department. The training is based on protocols developed by the CSEPP medical community and concurs with the best practices developed by Army physicians and civilian medical personnel at the 8 sites in the United States where the aging stockpiles of chemical warfare agents are stored. Planners and emergency management agencies may also find the information useful.

The training was developed with the assistance of the University of Tennessee Hospital, local fire and hazardous materials units, and emergency medical technicians. Additional input was provided by practicing emergency room physicians and the CSEPP medical community. Thus it is comprehensive in scope and accurate in content.

At the end of the training the viewer should be able to describe:

Protocols developed by CSEPP for handling patients potentially exposed to chemical warfare agents,

Requirements for the types of PPE that should be used by medical personnel to protect staff against secondary contamination

Triage of patients exposed to chemical warfare agents,

Decontamination process for ambulatory and litter patients,

Signs and symptoms of nerve and blister agent contamination, and

Appropriate treatment for victims exposed to chemical warfare agents.

Other concepts touched on include differential diagnosis for chemical agent exposure and the importance of debriefing medical staff following a mass casualty event.

The video will be available in VHS and DVD formats with a student notebook.  The notebook will contain references for additional information and the DVD will include PDF files of relevant resource documents.
